Representing the EDM scene, Skrillex partook in the panel for the Billboard Touring Conference where he and others shared their philosophies and thoughts on live performances along with everything that goes into it. The conference was geared towards evaluating the Grateful Dead model of touring/performing which helped to usher in the development of the successful modern structure that we use today. Sonny goes into his own views on live shows and mentions not only his own process, but brings Deadmau5 into the conversation as well. Being from both realms of music has allowed Sonny to get a unique perspective on the topics that are brought up.
“I don’t just hit play on the space bar and let it play the whole set. I mix every song–and I do mess up. I’m changing my set every night and producing new records on the tour bus to test out — so it is very much in the moment.
Deadmau5 has a programmed set, with MIDI triggering all of his lights. It’s a beautiful show, but his show is the most “press-play” show there is because he’s running Ableton Live. I’m not against it…But people like to see him, because he’s Joel. He’s an artist and he has a personality. I think that’s the superior part about being an artist.”

AM Only‘s president Lee Anderson also has some things to say of his own in regards to OWSLA and the promotion that goes into live performances. He is big on logos and identifiable trademarks which are incredibly strong advertisement tools. Other panelists from the conference are Warren Hayes, Jonathan Levine, Sam Hunt, Rock Scully and Gregg Perloff. The whole video is worth watching but for those who want to skip to Skrillex, he speaks at 5:41.

LOL that’s called a Live perfomance thanks Sonny.
I stopped at this garbage beginning of a sentence “Representing the EDM scene, Skrillex”
lol Skrillex DJ’d with Ableton Live his first 2 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okzNb23nv_Q Not sure why he’s bashing it.
sonny better be thanking god joel quit twitter.
Didnt know this. Changes my view of Joel as he often criticizes others. Im share his opinion almost always though
He specifically states “I’m not against it”
How in any way is he bashing if he’s telling the truth
Just because I say hitler killed 6 million people, am I bashing or stating a fact?
deadmau5 and skrillex are both good. edm is always going to be a sort of mixing of pre-made stuff. just like rock or country. the riff might be a little different when Pearl Jam or Green Day plays live, but at the end of the day, it’s still the same song at the core. EDM is music and therefore not different from that.
skrillex used to use ableton live and he was pretty bad at djing. He has gotten a lot better tho
Deadmau5 it’s always the same! same house, same bpm.
got ’em
I feel bad for Skrillex. I mean, this guy pretty much rose EDM and Dubstep to the height it is at today. He might not have created EDM or Dubstep, but because of him, Dubstep is a household term. My grandmother knows what Dubstep is. He took EDM to the masses, and in the process, inspired countless artists. What does he get in return? Complete bashing by the EDM scene. I’m not a huge Skrillex fan, but the guy knows what he is talking about.
Ableton Live is designed to play original music and remix it live….NOT to DJ. I’ve seen people use it for DJing but I don’t think that was its original intended purpose. If you are using it to DJ….its probably because you can’t beat match, blend/mix songs without the damn SYNC capability…and you’re probably the same dude who turns it on in Serato just to DJ. Now if you are going to perform live….with Ableton or Traktor (and use its remix decks and controller) than you HAVE TO use Sync to keep all of your separate sounds/loops (that you made) all “in-time” so that your music follows a “time signature” like they were each a band member. So really this argument is over two different things and comparing apples to oranges. I will agree that “pressing play” and “pretneding to do shit” is lame and you might as well be Brittany Spears lip syncing at a concert….
At the end of the day….no one gives a shit except other Artists, DJs, and Producers…. But truthfully “The Fans” are the only ones that matter…. After all….shows are about entertaining the crowd….and 99% of those listening don’t give a shit what you are doing to make it sound good as long as it sounds good. So have fun and fuck everything else….

being a DJ/producer is all about being able to present your music through mixing I believe. I am highly against pressing play for a “flawless show”. Its all about learning and perfecting what you do. He’s just a producer
That’s not trash talk. An intricate light show at that level would be impossible to program on the fly.
Skrillex is fucking garbage, worst show I’ve ever seen…dosnt hold a candle to pretty lights, bassnectar, or glitch mob
I saw Deadmau5 when he did more of a live PA set. It gets boring going through the transitions.
All the biggest names in EDM love his music and play out his tracks constantly. If you want to sit behind your keyboard and say he’s bad, go right ahead. Just remember that the pros don’t give a fuck what you think.

OH GOOOOOD!!! Fucking stupid comments do we have here!!! people dont know whay they are.saying!!! im really scared for the ignorance here. really shame.
He used to run off of ableton and some beat pad or a midi, if I’m not mistaken. He hasn’t always used CDJ’s.
