It is now being reported that a massive fire in a nightclub in Bucharest has left 27 dead, and over 150 injured and seeking medical treatment.
The fire is believed to have been caused by fireworks that were set off inside the club.
Attendees paint a vividly horrifying picture of the madness inside the club which held up to 400 people on the night in question.
“People were fainting, they were fainting from the smoke. It was total chaos, people were trampling on each other,” Victor Ionescu, who was at the club, told local TV station Antena 3.
Many of the injuries being treated are for smoke inhalation and physical trauma, likely caused by the mass chaos of people trying to get out. The club was a converted factory with only one exit. The exit consisted of two small doors, only one of which was initially functioning. Attendees had to break down the second door.
“The only information we have is that fireworks were used in the club and after that the tragedy happened. Of course, this is under investigation,” Emergency response chief Raed Arafat told the BBC.
