The music industry world has been awash with plenty of news and speculation regarding the 59th Annual Grammy Awards set to take place tomorrow evening. Following the exciting announcement that Daft Punk will be performing alongside The Weeknd for their only scheduled performance for the year (so far), Grammy organizers The Recording Academy have done it again by announcing the first ever man and transgendered woman among their ‘trophy girls’ – a first in GRAMMY history.

The three designated ‘trophy girls’ for Sunday evening are Martina Robledo, Derek Marrocco, and Hollin Haley. Martina Robledo is a transgender model who has modeled for Valentino, Ralph Lauren, and more. Derek Marrocco is a male model and actor while Texas native Hollin Haley is also a model and actress.

The ‘trophy girls’ refer to the group of individuals who have brought the Grammy Awards onstage – traditionally women. President of the Recording Academy Neil Portnow points to the term ‘trophy girl’ as one that’s been ‘antiquated for some time now’ adding that “the ability to present a trophy has nothing to do with one’s gender.”

Congratulations to the Recording Academy and all others involved in making history and highlighting diversity in a national spotlight!
