After Daft Punk provided the entire score for Disney’s Tron: Legacy in 2010, fans wondered if the French duo would return for the next installment of the series. Though Tron 3 had been greenlit and Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde had signed on again, it never really seemed like Tron ever had the full backing of Disney. With script and production delays, the movie finally set its eyes on beginning production this fall, but a report yesterday confirmed that the movie was in fact cancelled.
The Tron: Legacy soundtrack was a big hit for Daft Punk. After almost three years of silence, scoring the film was their first musical project; and it was well received, peaking at #6 on the Billboard chart and becoming certified Gold. It also birthed a remix album with artists like The Glitch Mob, Paul Oakenfold, Kaskade, Avicii, and Moby all participating. The remix album also did well, hitting #1 on Billboard’s Top Electronic Albums and peaking at #16 on the main chart. Though Tron 3 has been cancelled for now, it’s important to note that there was a 23-year gap between Tron and its sequel, so I wouldn’t give up hope just yet.
