Instagram has long been the king of pictures and selfies, but now the powerful platform may start seeing a whole new side: people sharing their favorite music. A French startup is aiming to bring music to platforms that, until very recently, have not allowed for such content.

The app is called Sounds and is available on both IOS and Android. How does it work? Users casually discover music and when they find something they like, they can share it to various social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat, Tinder and more.

The app piggy-backs off Instagram’s recent addition of “videos” which it uses to convert music into small video clips. Although it is dangerous for a startup to build a product that is so reliant on other pre-existing platforms, Sounds seems to have struck gold as there is nothing else even close currently available in the market:

“Unlike other apps, we only use the cover art when you share a song. That’s why our users share a lot more often. We don’t use music as a way to showcase user-generated content.” -CEO Rhai Goburdhun

Although Sounds allows for exporting of music to multiple platforms, the primary bulk of its users make use of it for their Instagram accounts. While the posted music has the watermark on it, Sounds is currently working with several labels and brands to expand their licensed music catalog. Partners include the likes of Ed Banger Records, Bromance Records and The Fader:

“We signed a partnership with The Fader for example. When professionals share something, they don’t have a watermark. In exchange, we ask them for some feedback. So far, we have 3,000 artists and labels using Sounds.” -Rhai Goburdhun

Sounds is still a young application, but with big plans in the works they hope to shake up Instagram as yet another platform to share music on – for artists and fans alike. You can check out an example of Sounds in action below and download it here.
