Tomorrowland’s opening weekend came with an unexpected mystery: two commissioned paintings, Love and Desire, have gone missing from the festival grounds in Belgium. The pieces were part of a set of six original works displayed inside the Tomorrowland Restaurant, each one built around a universal emotion tied to this year’s Consciencia theme. The remaining four, Wonder, Anger, Joy, and Sadness, are still on view, but the collection is currently incomplete.
What makes the disappearance stranger is that it happened with security present nearby, and organisers have yet to share how or when exactly the artworks left the grounds. Tomorrowland has since put out a public appeal hoping for their return before the festival’s second weekend kicks off, with spokesperson Debby Wilmsen noting that whoever now holds the paintings should recognise they belong at Tomorrowland, where everyone can enjoy them.
The missing pieces sit at the center of Consciencia, the festival’s latest creative world exploring six emotions through art, architecture, and storytelling across the grounds, a concept Tomorrowland plans to carry into future editions beyond Belgium. Being purpose-built for this year’s theme, the paintings aren’t easily swapped for replacements, leaving a noticeable gap in the exhibit for now. As of this writing, no updates have been shared on their recovery, and organisers are hoping for a resolution before gates open for weekend two.
