Reza Safinia is back with new music for the first time in five years, and it’s arriving with serious scope. The Los Angeles-based producer, multi-instrumentalist, and film composer has shared ‘Stardusted Girl’, the lead single off his upcoming double album 1/∞, due out August 26. The record follows 2021’s companion releases ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’, and this time Safinia is building something even more ambitious — a sprawling, meticulously sequenced project where each vinyl side corresponds to one of the four classical elements: fire, water, air, and earth.

‘Stardusted Girl’ offers an early look at the album’s emotional core. It’s a falsetto-heavy synth-pop track about a relationship that feels both irresistible and harmful, with Safinia’s voice moving between softness and seduction throughout. Underneath, the production stays dark and rhythmic, with a driving bassline and synth patterns that rise and fall in waves, grooving hard while never losing its unsettled edge. Lyrically, the song builds out a kind of mythology around its subject, leaning on astrological and esoteric imagery to frame the relationship as something that feels ancient and recurring rather than tied to one moment in time.

What makes the song land differently, though, is where Safinia takes the meaning by the end. What reads on the surface as a love song about instant, cosmic connection eventually turns inward. Safinia has said the realisation for him was that the relationship’s real function was to expose his own weaknesses, forcing him to sit with them rather than run. By that read, the “stardusted girl” of the title isn’t really about another person at all, it’s Safinia himself. That same idea carries into the accompanying video, which shows him morphing into an AI-generated female version of himself before the two forms merge, visually mirroring the song’s arc from outward longing to internal reckoning.

1/∞ is Safinia’s biggest project yet, touching on everything from addiction and cancel culture to war and how technology shapes the way we connect, all shaped by his mix of classical training and electronic production. He’s also no stranger to scoring for screen, having worked on HBO Max’s Warrior and the Nicolas Cage film The Trust. The album pulls from a heavy few years personally and globally, including last year’s LA wildfires and the recent war in Iran, and Safinia says it all comes back to one idea: that love is what ties everything together.

‘Stardusted Girl’ is out now via all music platforms, with 1/∞ arriving August 26.
