Renowned for his smooth, melodic and uplifting sound Lost Frequencies is an international EDM superstar who has redefined the industry with his unmatched innovation. The 31-year-old Belgian DJ and producer jumpstarted his career with his breakout hit ‘Are You With Me’ in 2014. Now, 10 years later Lost Frequencies remains a pioneering figure with his discerning and intentional artistry.
In an exclusive YourEDM interview with the award-winning artist, he reveals his approach to collaborations, balancing social media with his craft, and how his sound has developed recently.
Looking back, did you have any clue that your breakout hit ‘Are You With Me’ would be such a phenomenon?
I don’t think any producer, especially early in their career, expects one track to be the breakthrough hit. But here we are! I owe a lot to that track for launching my career and allowing me to do what I love. Even in the beginning, I was constantly learning and evolving my sound. Reflecting on my career, I’m proud of how much I’ve grown as an artist, and I think my amazing fans and peers can see that evolution through my albums and singles. I’m incredibly grateful to still be doing this a decade later.
Is there another song or project that is special to you personally?
I think more recently, it would be ‘Where Are You Now’. I always believed in that track, from the melody to the lyrics and Calum Scott’s vocal delivery. To see it grow from being played live in my sets, to being nominated for a BRIT Award and hitting #1 on the UK charts was an incredible feeling.
You’ve collaborated with some of the most influential artists in the world, including Netsky, James Blunt and Bastille. Do you have a specific approach when collaborating with other artists?
I just have to be a fan of them and the music they are making! If you listen to any of my collaborations, you’ll notice they always carry the unique sound of the artists I’m working with, while still staying true to my own style. It’s important to have a shared vision and be on the same page. I make electronic music, but I’m also a big fan of pop, drum and bass, progressive house and so on. Being able to experiment with different styles throughout my career, like I did with my buddy Netsky on ‘Here With You’, has been a lot of fun. I’m always looking to push forward and keep things evolving.
Your social media presence is incredibly powerful and influential. How do you balance social media content with working on your craft?
Thank you! I work with a great team on my content and to be honest, I always want it to reflect who I am so it’s truly authentic. I want to share my day-to-day life, while keeping things fun, engaging and bring my fans along for the ride with me, as they are such an important part of my journey.
You’re playing at Terra Solis in Dubai for Tomorrowland on New Year’s Eve. How do you prepare for such monumental performances? Do you have a specific routine or ritual?
I always enjoy playing in Dubai and New Year’s Eve is always a special occasion! I want to make it a night to remember as NYE has so much significance to people and music can totally elevate the magic of the night. I’ve been working on some exclusive edits, fresh productions and maybe even testing out some upcoming music as well…
Is there a city/ place you would like to perform for the first time or return? Why?
I played in Australia for the first time last spring, and it was an experience I’ll never forget! Knowing that my music is celebrated on the other side of the world and having so many amazing fans there is an insane feeling. The audience at my show really knew how to party, and the beautiful weather and warm reception made it even more special. I’d love to go back soon!
What key piece of advice would you give to your younger selves as burgeoning producers or DJs?
Never give up and expect the unexpected! On the surface, it may seem like it’s all about luxury travel, being in the spotlight, and living the high life, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. And honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. Having a passion for music and turning that into a career is something I’ll always be grateful for. So, for young producers wanting to follow the same path—trust your gut and take the leap. You never know where your journey will take you.
How has your sound evolved in recent years?
I’d like to think, and I hope my audience has noticed this too, that I’ve become more ambitious and confident in the music I’m creating. On my latest album All Stand Together I collaborated with so many amazing artists and really pushed my sound into a house-meets-pop hybrid. It’s a snapshot of where I am now as an artist. Early in my career, I worked in a more formulaic way and felt pressure to stick to a certain sound or play a specific role as a producer. But now, I have the confidence and support to fully express myself in the way I want.
What fuels your creativity outside of music?
I eat, sleep and breathe music, so for me, it’s more about how I translate feelings and emotions into my creations, making them something my fans can connect with. The inspiration that fuels my music can come from a variety of sources, whether it’s an emotion, my travels or collaborating with other artists in the studio. It’s different for every project and it’s all very organic.
2024 has been a remarkable year for you, what can we expect in 2025?
Lots of new music and I’ll be back on the road again in the spring! I like to take the start of the year to reflect and prepare for what’s coming up, which means even during my “downtime,” I’m still spending time in the studio. So, you can definitely expect a lot of new music! Thank you for all your support and I hope to see you at a show in 2025!
