We’ve all known deadmau5 to be a rather brash individual, one without a filter. However, this week, he’s made tweets that led to him being accused of transphobia and homophobia, as well as calling another producer’s music “autistic shit.” These tweets are out of character for deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, and the reality of that hasn’t gotten past him.
In a statement posted to Twitter this evening, Zimmerman writes, “This has been a very difficult period and I sincerely apologize for my comments which were completely offensive and I take full responsibility for. […] I’ve consulted with friends and loved ones and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m in need of professional help to get on top of my issues and become a better me.”
His admission is made even more salient today, on World Mental Health Day. It’s okay to not be okay, and despite his “completely offensive” statements, we stand with him as he faces his own challenges ahead.
