UK Government to introduce ban on ticket resales above face value

The UK government has announced that it will ban the resale of event tickets for more than the ticket’s original price. The news, which broke on the Guardian, states that government aims to curb ticket touting and assist in the regulation of the secondary market, which also includes social media.

According to the Guardian, UK Ministers had been considering allowing touts and ordinary consumers to re-sell tickets for up to 30% more than the original price. This was part of a consultation process which ended earlier in the year.

The new legislation will apply to individual ticket resellers and prominent platforms like StubHub and Viagogo. Under the new legislation, resellers will be prohibited from advertising more tickets than they initially purchased, while resale platforms are only permitted to add limited service fees (the amount has not yet been determined) which will be capped to prevent price inflation.

These new measures build on the UK’s current 30% limit on resale markups, which was introduced earlier this year by culture minister Lisa Nandy. This also received massive push back from secondary ticketing organisations, who stated that stricter laws could be a gateway to increased fraud.

The Competition and Markets Authority will enforce this newly announced legislation, which will hold both resellers and platforms legally accountable for any breaches.
