A new survey by leading global financial services firm Morgan Stanley, has found some interesting insights in relation to AI generated music and younger listeners. The report was part of Morgan Stanley’s annual audio habits of American people.
The research team was led by analyst Benjamin Swinburne, and found that there’s a significant amount of millennials and Gen Z’s who are engaging with and listening to AI generated music. This is happening mostly on TikTok and YouTube, due to the number of AI generated content on those platforms.
According to the report, between 50% and 60% of listeners who are between 18-44 years old, reported listening to around 2.5 to 3 hours of AI music per week.
According to the graph above, there’s a clear generational gap between age groups. The findings state that 60% of listeners between the ages of 18 – 29 listen to AI music on average 3 hours a week. Listeners aged between 30 – 44 listen to AI music around 2.5 hours a week, whereas 25% of people aged between 45 – 64 listen to an average of 1.1 hours of AI music per week, and 4% of listeners aged 65 years and older engage in 0.1 hours of AI music per week.
The topic of AI in the music industry has been extremely contentious over the last two to three years, and it will undoubtedly become more so as AI technology advances. Last week, Bandcamp announced that it has banned all AI music from the platform, and is the first major platform to do so.
