Few artists in electronic music are as closely associated with cats as deadmau5, and the producer is once again putting that reputation to good use. The Canadian artist has donated $30,000 to support the care of 27 rescue cats taken in by the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton in Ontario.
The shelter recently rescued the cats and kittens from a local home, with the animals requiring veterinary care, vaccinations, microchipping, spaying or neutering procedures and ongoing support before they can be adopted. After the organisation appealed to the public for help covering the costs, deadmau5 stepped in with a simple response on social media: “I got you.”
The producer’s involvement didn’t stop with the donation. deadmau5 later encouraged fans to help name the rescued felines, launching a community initiative through his social channels that will eventually see the public vote on their favourite suggestions before the cats find their forever homes.
The contribution continues a long-standing commitment to animal welfare from the producer, who has three rescue cats of his own and regularly supports feline charities. Earlier this month, he also launched a Reverb Shop featuring music gear and memorabilia, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Toronto Cat Rescue, proving that his affection for cats extends well beyond the iconic mau5head.
