One of Australia’s bright young things, Melbourne native Samual James has just released his new electro house single ‘Vita’. Dropped on the combined imprint run by Sony Australia and Jon Hanlon, Basik Rkrds, the young producer shows exactly why he is starting to become in demand with this release. ‘Vita’ received an exclusive Pete Tong premiere a few weeks back, and it’s clear to see why. Dynamic synths, energised vocal pumps and foot-shaking rhythms make up ‘Vita’, and James seamlessly blends melody with a gnarlier dance floor beat. We got to know Samual a little better to find out more about both himself and the new single.
What age did you first get into producing at?
I first started experimenting with mashups and edits when I was 17 and progressed to producing at around the age of 18, although it was just a hobby up until I was about 20!
Who would you say are your biggest inspirations?
Tiesto was my first and biggest inspiration to begin with. My brother showed me a clip of ‘Adagio for Strings’ at Tiesto’s 2004 concert and I was hooked! Armin is also a big inspiration, both as an artist and businessman.
‘Vita’ is about to drop on Basik Records – How did you end up working with them?
The director of my Australian agency also happens to be involved with Basik, so it all happened very organically. They approached me to do the labels debut release, which was also my first original release ‘Mega’.
Describe ‘Vita’ in three words…

You recently joined HELENA at one of her Drai’s residency nights, how did you find that?
That was an amazing night! It was my first international show and I don’t think it could have been at a more beautiful club. I got to warm things up and there was a great atmosphere in the venue all night, HELENA smashed it!
Do you have any plans for a forthcoming EP/LP at the moment?
Not at this stage. I’m happy dropping singles for the time being!
In terms of shows/festivals for the rest of the year, what else is coming up for you?
A lot of shows locked in Australia wide for the rest of the year. I’m also a part of this years Ultraglow Paint Party tour once again, as well Stereosonic Melbourne & Sydney in December.
