Thomas Bangalter made a rare return to the US DJ circuit this week with a surprise appearance at The Lot Radio in Brooklyn, marking his first solo set in the country in nearly two decades. The performance, streamed live from the station’s minimalist booth, arrived without prior announcement and quickly circulated online in full, drawing attention not just for its rarity, but for its stripped-back, deliberate framing.
Best known as one half of Daft Punk, Bangalter used the 75-minute set to move away from nostalgia-driven expectations and instead focus on atmosphere and lineage. His selections drew from a wide spectrum of electronic influence, including Aphex Twin, Burial, Boards of Canada, and Flying Lotus, alongside cinematic textures associated with John Carpenter and material from his solo project Mirage.
Rather than leaning into legacy markers, the set unfolded as a curated listening experience that blurred eras and styles, treating the booth less as a performance space and more as a narrative environment. The closing track, Daft Punk’s ‘Contact’, offered a restrained acknowledgment of his past work, but without framing it as a revival or reunion gesture. 
The setting itself reinforced the tone: The Lot Radio, an independent Brooklyn station known for its unpolished, community-first broadcasts, has become a key platform for intimate electronic performances in contrast to large-scale festival culture. Against that backdrop, Bangalter’s appearance felt less like a comeback and more like a quiet recalibration of how legacy artists engage with contemporary club spaces.
