Just a few short days ago, we featured a brief preview of Pittsburgh native and rising bass star Buku‘s Fooled EP. From the snippets alone we knew this release was going to be explosive to say the least and after one listen, we can’t help but say we told you so!
The EP kicks off with the title track, “Fooled” and within seconds draws you in with a hypnotic synth line and his signature dirty bass which builds and breaks into a swanky, bass-filled banger. “Fooled” which was championed and premiered by UKF, expertly sets the tone of the release as a whole – a perplexing combination of laid-back beats and bass that will have you yearning for more. The second track,”Booty Clapasaurus”, opens with more astral sounding synths before breaking into that ‘Buku-Bounce‘ we’ve come to love. The third original of the release, “Slap It”, brings the most energy to the EP but still manages to guide the listener from drop to drop. Combining heaps of cacophonous sounds and samples into one cohesive entity, “Slap It” is impressive from start to finish. The final track of the release, “Tip Toe” brings the listener back full circle. Filled to the brim with thunderous bass and sumptuous sampling, “Tip Toe” may very well be my favorite tune of this stellar release.
Trap as a genre, has grown at an extraordinary rate but with this rapid growth I regularly find myself hearing the same rather monotonous sounds just being rearranged and restructured from track to track. 808’s, hi-hats, rattling snares and hands claps, although entertaining, don’t always make for a dynamic record. What I respect the most about Buku, is his eagerness to take trap in a new direction. One that still fuses aspects of hip-hop and bass music but in a seemingly unparalleled fashion. His Fooled EP, serves as a testament to this fact and clearly reiterates that this rising star is here to stay.
