Just your average gamer boy and internet-junkie making amazing hit-tunes and DJing at famous electronic music festivals around the world…
Wait, what?
That’s right. Deep down on the inside, Porter Robinson is that nerdy, obsessed-with-Japanese-video-games, boy next door that we all secretly have a huge crush on (or not so secretly, according to some of his Twitter followers…)
In his Made in A Minute Youtube video sponsored by Budweiser, Porter accredits his love for electronic music to his younger gaming days, saying,
“I’ve never seen a DJ. Ever. When I was 12 years old, the only music I really liked was Japanese video game music.”
It seems that this connection is not far-fetched; as I have heard of many similar stories of people first becoming acquainted with electronic music through video games; however, clearly not all of them have the same sort of talents and successes as Porter when it comes to producing. So sorry, Minecraft-lovers, you’re probably not going to be the next big thing in EDM.
And who said spending too much time online was a bad thing? You know, besides Grandma? Although he admits to communicating and even fighting with his brother and friends over the Internet without realizing he knew them IRL, being computer-savvy ended up really benefitting Porter when it comes to his fame.
“I was just making electronic music for 10 hours a day and when I was 18 I had a song that happened to kind of like blow up on the internet”.
And then, you know, people wanted him to try that DJ-ing stuff, and he just “learned how to do that”. No big deal.
The rest is history. Porter’s success and fame is exponentially rising, a friend of mine even declaring that he had the overall best set at EDC Orlando this past weekend…. all due to an affinity for video games.
“I think I have kind of a different way of coming into it and there’s no question that video games[…]were influential in that”.
So there you go gamer girls and boys, those who spend their waking hours glued to controllers, those who troll the interwebz far into the wee hours of the morning- this all may just work out for you in the long run.
Watch Porter share his story about his rise to fame in under a minute for yourself. Also, who is that around his neck!?

Never liked his work.
He used to make hands up style music as Ekowraith years ago (I got some of his promos from a label way back when), and then he did a kind of… sub-par uncredited cover of “Take Me Home” by Manyou… Dave kinda disappoint. On a lot of levels. Other trance/ hands up artists have done really great jobs making forays into electro and progressive… but I’ve not been terribly impressed with Porter’s jump. 😐
All i’d say is that Language was a life changing song for me and always gives me goosebumps. I’ll always have a high esteem for this kid.
The necklace is a cute onigiri, a rice ball, perler bead piece made by my friend and given to him back stage after his set at Made in America, where we found him!
