Kygo to be the Next Rising Star in EDM and Beyond

Having garnered interest from some of the biggest record labels, Norwegian DJ Kygo may be the next biggest star in EDM. His unique sound — dubbed tropical house — finally brings something new to the table in the seemingly oversaturated EDM scene, so it’s no surprise that labels like Sony and Ultra have swooped him up.

Tropical house possesses a relaxed, chill sound that’s reminiscent of summer and beaches, and is embodied by Kygo’s remixes of tracks such as Marvin Gay’s “Sexual Healing,” Ellie Goulding’s “High For This” and Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire” (which has over 28 million views on YouTube).

Despite being a pioneer in the tropical house sound, Kygo’s debut album — which is due in April next year — won’t be categorized as EDM, but will rather position the young artist as a “global pop artist.” “I want my music to be strong enough to reach beyond [tropical house],” says Kygo. “Coldplay doesn’t have to stay within a certain genre, they just go where they go.”

We always appreciate innovators within the EDM world, and we’ll certainly have our eyes and ears on Kygo to see what he comes up with next.
