Research Suggests Live Music May Synchronise Brain Activity Between Listeners 

A growing body of peer-reviewed neuroscience research is offering scientific insight into the shared sense of connection often reported during live music experiences. Multiple studies examining audience behaviour and neural response patterns suggest that music may lead to measurable synchronisation between listeners’ brain activity, particularly in emotionally engaging group environments.

One study published in Scientific Reports, titled Music synchronizes brainwaves across listeners with strong effects of repetition, familiarity and training, explored how listeners responded to identical musical stimuli using EEG brain recordings. Conducted by researchers Jens Madsen, Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, Rhimmon Simchy-Gross, and Lucas C. Parra, the study found that participants displayed aligned neural responses when exposed to the same pieces of music. According to the paper, “when their neural responses proceed in sync, the music is driving their experience,” pointing toward measurable patterns of shared engagement between listeners. The study further observed that unfamiliar music often sustained stronger synchronised responses over repeated exposure compared to familiar material. 

Additional research published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, titled Audience Interbrain Synchrony During Live Music Is Shaped by Both the Number of People Sharing Pleasure and the Strength of This Pleasure, by Dikker et al., examined live concert environments and identified synchronised brain activity among audience members during emotionally heightened moments of performance. The study found that interbrain synchrony was associated with shared emotional response and collective audience engagement during live music experiences. 

Taken together, the findings from both studies point toward a consistent pattern in which shared musical experiences can produce measurable alignment in how listeners respond on a neural and emotional level. While the research is not specific to electronic music culture, it offers a relevant scientific framework for understanding the sense of collective connection often reported in live environments where rhythm, repetition, and group engagement are central elements, including clubs, raves, and festival settings within EDM culture.
