We recently had the opportunity to catch up with electronic artist, vocalist, producer, and DJ Nathassia, discussing her multicultural creative journey, the inspiration behind her latest release ‘Perfect Harmony (DEADLINE Remix)’, and her perspective on the ever-evolving electronic music scene.
Many artists today move across and blend genres rather than fitting neatly into a single category. How would you personally define or label your sound, and what genres, subgenres, or underground scenes have most influenced and shaped your evolution as an artist?
My sound sits at the intersection of electronic dance music, world music, and storytelling. I blend uplifting melodies, hypnotic vocals, and cinematic elements with influences from progressive trance, melodic house & techno, and global sounds inspired by my Indian, Surinamese, and Dutch heritage. Over the years I’ve been influenced by everything from the golden era of trance and Ibiza club culture to underground melodic house and techno scenes. As both a vocalist, producer and DJ, I’m always exploring ways to combine emotion, culture, trends and technology into something that feels timeless yet forward-thinking. 
How did the environment you grew up in shape you as an artist, and in what ways does it still influence your creative identity today?
Growing up between different cultures has a huge impact on me. My Dutch, Indian, and Surinamese roots exposed me to a wide variety of music, traditions, and perspectives. I was always fascinated by mythology, travel, and discovering connections between different parts of the world, which later became recurring themes in my music. Even today, I draw inspiration from cultural storytelling, spirituality, and the idea that music can bring people together across borders. That multicultural upbringing remains at the heart of my creative identity.
Can you share a brief, compelling narrative or inspiration behind this new release?
My latest release is ‘Perfect Harmony (DEADLINE Remix)’. Following the momentum of the original, which debuted as the Highest New Entry on the UK Big Top 40 at No. 17 earlier this year and is currently sitting at No. 3 on the UK Club Charts, I’m thrilled to share a brand-new remix from Brazilian producer DEADLINE. DEADLINE brought this powerful dark energy and cinematic melodic techno sound that instantly reminded me of some of the huge records I love playing in my sets. It felt like the missing version of the track. I met DEADLINE in Brazil when we played together at F38, and after hearing his set and productions, my team and I instantly felt he was the perfect person for this remix.
Do you prefer producing music in a studio setting, or are you more comfortable creating on the road/during touring?
I enjoy both. A few years ago I attended a music production retreat in Ibiza, and it completely transformed my workflow. Since then I’ve built a portable studio around my laptop and can happily produce almost anywhere. Some days I’ll even choose to work on the laptop in my garden rather than sit at my main studio desk. However, for recording and producing my vocals, and for bringing out the big-gun synths, I always return to my studio setup with my SSL desk, where I can focus on getting the best possible performance and sound quality.
Have you performed at any major music festivals or large-scale venues? If so, which one would you consider the most significant milestone in your career so far?
While I’ve performed at many festivals and iconic venues, the defining milestone of my career was opening the Nefertiti International Fashion Festival at Luxor Temple, in Egypt with my song ‘Egypt’s Queen’. The event took place beside the Valley of the Kings and was attended by Egyptian royalty, hundreds of fans, and international media. Some of my fans travelled over 700 kilometres just to be there. It was also a history-making event, as live music had never previously been permitted at that location. It was a dream come true and remains one of the proudest moments of my career.
Do you feel more connected to the energy of major festival stages or the raw intimacy of underground warehouse parties and DIY spaces, or do you find inspiration equally in both worlds?
I find inspiration in both worlds because they offer completely different experiences. Festival stages create an incredible sense of unity, where thousands of people can share the same moment together. Smaller underground events, on the other hand, often allow for a deeper connection with the audience and a greater sense of musical discovery. Ultimately, it’s the connection with the crowd that inspires me the most, regardless of the size of the event.
What role does rebellion or counterculture play in your music? Whether through challenging commercial norms, experimenting with sound, questioning societal expectations, or simply creating from a place of pure expression, how do these ideas shape your artistic identity?
Earlier in my career, I was often focused purely on creative exploration, blending genres and cultural influences without worrying about labels. While that gave me a distinctive sound, it sometimes made it difficult for others to define where my music belonged. Over time, I’ve learned that innovation works best when listeners have a familiar point of reference. Today, I still love combining different influences, but I aim to give those ideas a clear musical home. For me, creativity isn’t about fitting into a box; it’s about knowing which box to start from before expanding beyond it.
How would you evaluate the current state of the global EDM scene in terms of its overall health and creative direction, and how would you position it within a broader spectrum ranging from emerging challenges to strong creative growth?
Electronic music is thriving creatively. Through hosting my weekly global radio show Goddess Is A DJ, I have the opportunity to discover and showcase music from artists around the world every week. What excites me the most is that electronic music continues to surprise me. Every week I discover tracks that completely catch me off guard. Just when you think you’ve heard it all, someone creates something that feels fresh and reminds you why you fell in love with music in the first place.
Do you see AI as a threat to musicians, a helpful collaborator, or something else? How do you plan to keep your music relevant as the industry changes rapidly because of these tools? By embracing AI, avoiding it, or taking a different approach?
I see AI as a creative tool rather than a threat. Like any technology, its impact depends on how it’s used. AI can help artists explore ideas, streamline workflows, and open new creative possibilities, but it can’t replace human experience, emotion, or the personal stories that give music meaning. I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between humanity and technology, which is a theme that has even appeared in my music (‘Love merges with technology’ – Song: Light of The World). Rather than resisting these developments, I believe artists should learn how to work alongside them while continuing to bring their own perspective and creativity to the process.
What’s one piece of advice you would offer to an aspiring DJ or producer looking to break into the music scene today?
Focus on developing your own identity, whilst keeping an eye on trends and what is currently popular. Trends come and go, but authenticity lasts. Keep learning, keep creating, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks.
Looking ahead, what excites you most about the next phase of your artistic journey, both creatively and personally?
What motivates me the most is that I still feel like I’m evolving. I’m particularly excited about continuing to develop my sound, reaching new audiences around the world, and building deeper connections with listeners through both my music and my radio show. Personally, I hope to keep learning, travelling, and finding inspiration in unexpected places. I feel like I’m entering a promising new chapter of the journey.
Are there any upcoming festivals, tours, collaborations, headline shows, or major projects listeners should keep an eye out for over the coming months?
There are several projects, including interesting new releases that I can’t mention yet but which I’m looking forward to sharing soon! I’m also in the midst of my melodic tour with multiple dates at clubs such as the Ministry of Sound London, EDEN Ibiza, and Amsterdam Dance Event.
