What’s a genre anymore, really? Clearly not very many voters in this year’s International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) are able to answer that question.
IDMA is an annual awards ceremony held during the Winter Music Conference in Miami and this year includes 57 different categories ranging from Best Global DJ to Best DJ Software. Both fans and professionals within the industry are able to vote in order to nominate who they deem worthy of these different titles. According to IDMA, every year there are more than “two million votes from music enthusiasts in 209 countries and territories”, contributing to the well-rounded and wide array of nominees.
This year, the array of nominees may have been a little too wide though considering Martin Garrix is up for Best Trance DJ. I admit that it can be difficult to genre-differentiate within EDM; however, I think it’s safe to say that Martin Garrix’s style of music is pretty far away from your typical trance sound.
One can only hope that Garrix doesn’t have his heart set on winning Best Trance DJ, because with his competition being legendary trance artists Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Dash Berlin, Gareth Emery, Markus Shulz, Mat Zo and W&W, his chances are pretty slim.
My guess for the nomination can be summed up in the famous quote by Miles Kington, “Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting it in fruit salad.”
“Knowledge is knowing that trance is EDM, wisdom is not voting Martin Garrix as Best Trance DJ.” – Me.

W&W is even a stretch if you ask me.
The fact that the boy is up for best DJ anything after making only one noticeable break out track is hilarious in his own right…. How about we vote for actually good DJ’s instead someone who happens to get his ONE track played 23 times at Ultra
Whats funny is I been expressing non stop how reatered fans are these days, and even more under educated and non talented artists are these days. People just keep making excuses for every wrong thing found with our scene. When will people realize this happened because of new technology, djs who suck playing everywhere, producers who use a few loops, throw them together amd become stars. In the ninties electronic was house, trance, dnb, hardcore period. Now its so retarded people call it edm. The scene is destroyed and only way to defeat it is challenge it. While I was challenging top forty with og arts, I will challenge the commercial with og arts. The scene is dead underground is forever
I miss the days when people actually knew the difference and therefore knew how to vote correctly.
W&W and Mat Zo as well…uhm?
