Check out this exclusive interview with Splitbreed, the masters of Rap and EDM fusion, whilst you listen.
Interview:
Tell me about Splitbreed’s background, both musically and how you came together.
Well me( Kalani) and Taui are brothers and we are actually 3rd generation entertainers our father Josefa mo’e at one time was the most photographed samoan in the world he would perform samoan knife dance, and polynesian music in hawaii with the likes of Don Ho and kui lee, my grandfather and grandmother were part of Felix mendelssohn and the hawaiian serenaders. They were one of the major influences to bring polynesian music to Europe.
Kyle Dj Bgenius was once a freestyle battle rapper all gangster and shit then he went PLUR and grew a blonde mohawk.
We met in Las Vegas when we would produce strictly hip hop music in our old home studio. We started working together on a daily basis and the rest is history.
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
It would probably have to be some of the more high profile collabs like Pegboard nerds, Revolvr Dodge and Fuski, . We also did our first nationwide tour this year so that was cool. Hitting #1 on the Beatport glitch hop charts with our collaboration with revolvr and genesis “unstoppable” was pretty awesome this year too, it stayed in the top ten for like 3 months! expect some amazing remixes for that tune from the likes of aero chord , pixel and au5 out on Simplify recordings here in the next month or so. ok we are gonna stop now because it sounds like were bragging.
What do you bring for your live performances that sets you apart from normal DJ acts?
Crowd interaction an a certain energy I believe you only get from live vocals…plus I’ll probably jump in the crowd and perform a song in the middle of a mosh pit
In terms of genre, where is Splitbreed focusing?
To be honest it’s a hard question to answer..we really have no allegiance to any genre..we’re hip hop/EDM…we’ve been doing a lot of trap lately but that’s not to say we won’t go do a country song next week lol
You’ve had two huge releases recently, with Freakshow and WDGAFUCK, but have something even bigger coming… can you tell me a little bit about Mile High?
We have some really cool colabs on the way but I can’t really talk about it (cough cough excision) I wish I could tell you more (cough cough razihel)
As for Mile high club, I think that it shows our identity and lifts you up….music you get HI 2!
Can you describe what went into this mix that you have for us today?
The mix features a lot of friends in the industry. People we have worked with. A Splitbreed and Friends so to speak, Lots of trap and a bunch of our tunes as well. Enjoy!
