Your EDM Premiere: dark cat – can’t you see (feat. lonemoon) [cloudhead records]

Rarely does an artist so consistently fight against themselves in their own branding and imagery as much as dark cat. Judging from the name alone, you’d imagine a sort of dark and maybe oppressive sound; however, look again at the branding and notice how it’s all lowercase, the sign of a more childish outlook. The EP art for Finite is equally childish… a cat in a banana suit? Come on, that’s adorable. And then you’ve got the music…

This is one of the more bubbly tracks I’ve heard, which is honestly pretty typical for cloudhead records. And as it builds, it sort of sounds like a combination of Owl City and any of a dozen other lite productions. The drop, on the other hand, is a cacophony of juxtaposing sounds that somehow find harmony. Half of my time listening to this track is dancing, the other half is wondering what it is I’m actually listening to.

The full Finite EP is out May 30. Pre-order here.
