There is something very rewarding about stepping completely out of your comfort zone and being surprised to see you like it. With DJ PIPES’ new EP, I was surprised in this exact manner.
DJ Pipes is a breaks producer originating in small town Canton, Ohio, whose five most recent releases have all charted on Beatport. The Shut Em Down EP, released on Groove Therapy Records, is one that shows you can do so much more with less.
The title track, featuring an opening of a familiar and comforting sample from Tupac Shakur’s “California Love,” and dropping into some earth shattering breaks in a very dance-able tempo, is clearly a heater that will be dropped plenty of sets. The latter track, “Shake That Thing,” is a spectacularly funky twist on Sean Paul’s 2002 chart topper of the same name with an absolutely vibrant controlling bassline and high-hat samples that practically demand you shake your hips. This one is guaranteed to get any crowd moving the second it’s played.
