Back in the day, “Lil” as part of a rapper name wasn’t all that common. Don’t get us wrong, it was common, with the likes of Lil Bow Wow, Lil Kim, Lil Wayne, etc. popping up throughout the ’90s and into the early ’00s. But something has happened in the past decade (let’s call it “SoundCloud”) that has seen an eruption in the number of these types of artist names. In fact, according to Vlad TV, there are now over 8,000 rappers with “Lil” in their name on Spotify alone.

Lil Wayne is the most streamed “Lil” rapper of all time, but others like Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty are hot on his tail. The of course are the likes of Lil Pump, Lil Jon, and Lil Xan who have their own obsessed following.

There’s nothing to say there’s anything inherently wrong with this phenomenon, except that it isn’t exactly original anymore. And it’s becoming more rampant. Vlad claims that “Lil” names have seen a 106% increase over last year, and a 725% increase over 2016.
