The Chainsmokers have taken a dark, introspective turn with their music, as heard with “Sick Boy” and “Everybody Hates Me.” As it turns out, the duo’s music has been somewhat of an open book. Now, Drew Taggart is speaking out about his struggles with depression in a letter to fans.
“Songwriting is my therapy,” he starts out. “I dealt with depression for what most would call the height of The Chainsmokers career thus far.”
The Chainsmokers are certainly on top of their game, and from the outside looking in it seems like they’re doing better than ever. In some ways, that’s true. But, for Taggart, he’s learning to not hide his feelings behind a smile.
“You’d think that an artist getting their first massive break and seeing success in a career they love would have no problems, but that’s the funny thing about depression. It’s doesn’t matter what you’ve accomplished because it attacks how you feel about it.”
Through it all, songwriting has become his saving grace. Taggart says it wasn’t until he began putting feelings into his songs that he started to feel better. His entire statement is below.
