Your EDM Interview: Porn and Chicken Talk Repping Chicago At SAMF

Porn and Chicken - SAMF 2018 Porn and Chicken - SAMF 2018

Spring Awakening was absolutely lit this year — and for anyone looking for an answer as to why, you’ll find it with Porn and Chicken. The Chicago-bred, bass-heavy live band consisting of Dom Brown, Orville Kline, Fei “Phives” Tang and Ammo recently performed for their 7th time at SAMF and didn’t hold back one bit.

Throwing a party every time they step onto the stage is no easy task. It comes with a lot of hard work, dedication, and an undying hunger to represent their city to the fullest. That work hard, play harder mentality has certainly paid off for Porn and Chicken, and translates well onto a music festival’s main stage as they proved at SAMF this year.

Hot off their killer performance, we were able to catch up with the guys (and gal) backstage and words can’t explain how fun it was to get to know these individuals. Aside from being advised to not ask them about porn (they get that a lot), absolutely nothing was off limits.

This 10-minute sit down felt more like a party than an interview. Enjoy!

Porn and Chicken x Your EDM

Going off your Instagram profile, PnC is self-described as, “Lewd. Crude. Lascivious. Licentious.” I know what “lewd” means and I know what “crude” means, but help me out with those next two words…

Basically, they mean we’re anything that regular culture would consider out of the ordinary. Unconventional. Hypersexual. We’re a safe haven for people to be themselves. We enjoy weird. We appreciate things that aren’t the same. We want people to be themselves without judgement. That mantra is — come be as queer or as black or as big boned or as freckle faced as you want. Come as you are, but let’s party!

Coming off that stage, how did you feel?

Holy shit! Chicago came through. So much love. Such a good time. Spring Awakening looking dense! It was hometown vibes. Nothing feels better than stepping on stage to be there for your city. There are all these touring acts that show up here and people pile in for their sets. But, stepping onto a stage and having it packed out for a place that you live in is like, “Daaaammnnn homies!” I didn’t know we were tight like that! [laughing] People drive across the country to get vibes like that and we just took a cab here.

What’s it like repping Chicago at SAMF year after year?

This is our 7th. It’s always something to look forward to every year because it’s one of the biggest festivals in this city. We always want to make sure we deliver a performance — a spectacle that’s exciting for all of your senses. Spring Awakening for us is our time to show up, show what we’re made of, and show that we’re worthy of playing a main stage. We have to show we’ve got some really nice balls! [more laughing]

*Did you say balls?*

Your absolute favorite thing about playing SAMF, individually?

Ammo: The interaction with the crowd — it’s pretty massive. For some reason I don’t get as nervous with really big mobs like that as I do with smaller venues.

Orville: The direct connection with the fans of all ages is amazing. It’s like you’re putting on for your city.

Phives: The rippin’ and the tearin’… [just watch]

Dom: I get to bring my mom on stage! My mom has been our day one supporter. When we were like, “Listen — we’re gonna do this thing called Porn and Chicken full time.” She was like, “You boys do it!” Even when we played small crowds she was like, “Man, you guys really tore that up!” Having her be here and watch our growth — it’s like she knew we would be here. She expected it sooner.

Does your mom make good chicken?

Dom: Duh!

How do you guys come up with your crazy ideas?

*Marijuana! Alcohol! Ketamine* [laughing]

We come up with some of our best ideas when we’re fucked up in the green room. A lot of it takes getting fucked up and we can function like that. It kind of scares other people that aren’t on our wavelength. Because, we’re highly functional fucked up people. We’re weird, too!

What do you see happening right now in the Chicago music scene?

Right now we see a group of people coming together to work together and push ourselves to the next level. Everyone is holding each other accountable for the quality of work that they’re doing. Everyone is kind of binding together. There’s a strong local community right now. I will put some of our locals up against any headliner any day because they’re quality. Right now, we all want it so bad that we know the only way to get there is together. We’re going to fucking push this shit out of Chicago and show everyone else what’s up!

If you guys could plant a subliminal message into your music, what would it be?

Live your life out loud.
