In our interview with Joel Corry he discusses his Men’s Fitness UK cover, the last track that gave him goosebumps and he shares an exclusive mix below!
Where are you right now and how has your day or night been so far?
I am on a flight to Los Angeles ready for a big weekend in California. I am playing in LA, San Diego and San Francisco over the next few days. Feeling excited for some great parties and can’t wait to test out my new music in the clubs.
You recently released the powerfully emotive single ‘Phases’ with Abi Flynn. Can you give us a brief rundown of the track’s creative process and how it took shape?
Abi Flynn is an amazing talent, and we have great chemistry in the studio. We wrote ‘Phases’ with Eddie Jenkins, who is another writer I love working with. It was one of those days when everything flowed perfectly in the studio. We came up with the ‘Phases’ concept and Abi jumped in the booth and started laying down hooks. Once we had all the sections of the songs written we focussed on the production. I wanted to explore a darker, more emotional sound with ‘Phases’. I spent the summer working on it and testing it out in my sets until it was ready to release in September.
You’ve collaborated with artists like MNEK, RAYE and David Guetta. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned from working with other artists or producers?
The top artists always maintain their passion for creating music. It surprises me that even after a huge amount of success they are still so hungry for the next hit record. The music industry can be a tough place at times, but I have learnt to just keep working hard, stay positive and enjoy the journey.
Congratulations on your Men’s Fitness UK cover! In the interview you talk about how fitness is your anchor. Can you tell us a bit more about how your fitness regime has supported you throughout your musical career?
Thank you very much. Since I was a teenager my two hobbies in life have been DJing and going to the gym. My workouts and healthy diet keep me feeling physically fit and mentally balanced. It is important with the touring lifestyle to try and keep a routine. Wherever I am in the world I will always make time to get my gym session in.
The life of a touring DJ is no easy feat at all. What’s one significant sacrifice that you’ve had to make in order to maintain your busy touring schedule?
The biggest sacrifice is family time. Sometimes I am away for weeks on tour and miss special occasions back at home. It is awesome when my loved ones can experience my shows with me. I brought my mum to Ibiza this summer to see me play at Ushuaia, she loved it!
What’s a massive musical risk you took that you’re proud of?
My first hit record in 2019 ‘Sorry’ was a cover for a UK Garage classic ‘I’m Sorry’ by Monsta Boy and Denzie. I am a huge fan of the original record, and it was one of the first vinyl I ever bought when I first started DJing. When you sample or cover a classic track it is always a risk as people who love the original song may not like your new version. However, this became my first hit record and changed my life forever. The original artists were also very supportive, which meant the world to me.
As an artist who has 7 platinum UK records and 5 Brit Award nominations, do you believe there’s a formula for a successful dance record or is it all about intuition?
I don’t believe there is a ‘formula’ anymore. Hit records in dance music have become very random. Hits are driven by virality now which is extremely hard to predict. It is an exciting but challenging time which artists are having to adapt too. I think it is important to trust your own instincts and just make the music that you love.
Looking back, what advice would you give to your younger self who is just starting out as a DJ?
Cover up the BPM display on the decks. With modern day technology most decks and controllers will tell you the BPM of tracks, so it is easy to beat match. I learnt how to mix on vinyl using just my ear which was difficult. I would advise DJs starting to out to learn how to beat match without the assistance, as it is a good skill to have.
What’s the last song that gave you goosebumps?
The unplugged version of my single ‘Daydream’. Jem Cooke’s vocals are incredible. This acoustic style version really brings out the emotion in the song. You need to check it out!
What does the rest of 2025 hold for you, and what can your fans expect in 2026?
I just released by new collaboration with Galantis and Izzy Bizu called ‘Stay A Little Longer’. I am touring the USA until Christmas and then heading to Australia for NYE. I am working hard in the studio on new bangers for 2026. It is shaping up to be another amazing year for music and touring!
