PYLOT – The Place I Once Knew [Monstercat]

PYLOT – The Place I Once Knew [Monstercat]

I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t the biggest advocate of PYLOT when he first started releasing music back in early 2015. Though “After Dark” – his first single – made it seem like PYLOT’s style would center more toward funky French house, the following releases started turning toward the indie dance styles of 7 Minutes Dead (a fellow Monstercat artist), which turned me away pretty quickly. When PYLOT dropped “A Race Against Time” earlier this year, I felt like he was taking a step in the right direction, but not quite there yet.

Like many of the other 027 releases, I feel “The Place I Once Knew” is this artist’s best work to date. On many levels, the track features a clear homage to Daft Punk, from its TRON: Legacy soundtrack-styled structure to its RAM-era vocals. Although it seems like more of a tribute than an original work, this single makes for what is easily the most unique work we’ve seen yet from PYLOT. Other than that, all I can really say is that you should definitely consider a listen or two and really soak in the beauty of the track as a whole. If I wasn’t a fan before, I definitely am now.
