Deadmau5’s “Opening” Set Before Marshmello @ Decadence NYE Sparks Outrage

In a strange turn of events following the long documented public squabble between Deadmau5 and Marshmello, both acts found themselves playing one after the other at Decadence Arizona to help usher in the New Year.

At first glance, it appears as if the entire lineup is very much in the EDM/trap mold (not that there’s anything wrong with that) minus a lonely Green Velvet from the techno universe. That being said, Deadmau5 decided to play some techno as well, having been billed in between Porter Robinson and Marshmello and pulling out some Maceo Plex, Jay Lumen, Guy Mantzur and more.

Now, the ‘techmau5’, as it’s come to be known, is a fairly rare occurrence that’s most often reserved for festival after parties, so to see it being brought out on a festival main stage surely should have been a treat. Unfortunately, the crowd didn’t seem to think so, and judging by the public response on both Twitter and this Reddit thread posted to /r/deadmau5, it looked like the majority of the crowd had no idea what a treat they were just given.

@deadmau5 thanks for performing at decadence!! No idea how I’d go pee if Mello and porter were back to back ?

It literally felt like I was in an elevator half the time @deadmau5 was playing last night..

Who knew @deadmau5 sucked so much, can you play something good? Thanks..

Whole entire crowd at decadence

Marshmello played a Deadmau5 remix and it was better then Deadmau5’s whole set

— Kaytlin (@KAYTLINMARTINO) December 31, 2016

@deadmau5 marshmello was the only reason people stayed for your terrible set??#why “75 minutes of bullshit”

— Meghan (@megsta13) December 31, 2016

Negative responses aside, hopefully the next time around any main stage festival crowd will realize how lucky they were to able to see Deadmau5 come out of left field with some techno.
