In the wake of The Chainsmokers hotly contested debut album Memories… Do Not Open, Youtuber John Fassold has taken it upon himself to unravel the complicated and highly unique songwriting process behind many of the duo’s most famous hits.

Using simply a few keys on the piano, he describes how nearly every Chainsmokers track can be broken down into a combination of three basic chords, which are played back and forth throughout the length of the song. The notes that are sung during the tracks’ choruses, he says, usually come as the highest note in the respective chord.

The rest, Fassold says, is as easy as making up vague and hilarious lyrics to go along with the melodies.

Watch the funny take on The Chainsmokers’ songwriting process below.
