One of my favorite phenomena in the world is juxtaposition: two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. This effect can be achieved with a number of naturally occurring materials or feelings, including taste, colors, or textures; even comedy can benefit from juxtaposition (e.g., a straight man). This effect can also be used to great effect in music, where you take various tempos, intensities, melodies and such and arrange them in ways that accentuate each other.
Khamsin has taken this philosophy, whether intentionally or not, and employed it wonderfully in his new song with MOONZz, “My Way.” Each element has a parallel partner: MOONZz’s powerful, front-and-center vocal is paired with a backing vocal that provides melody and atmosphere; the light acoustic guitar plucks are paired against large, thunderous synths in the drop; the spirited percussion in the verse and bridge is contrasted by more punctuated, fervent drum kicks in the drop, as well.
Along with all of this, Khamsin achieves an unrelenting melodic experience that ties everything together in a neat little ribbon. Everything paired together simulates a sonic world that is all too easy to lose yourself in.
If it’s Khamsin’s way or the highway, I’d take his every time.
