A new study from researchers at the University of Leeds shows that women aged 40 to 65 are regularly attending electronic dance music events as a powerful way to support their mental and physical wellbeing.
Published in the journal Psychology of Music, the research surveyed 136 female clubbers and found that dancing at raves and festivals provides significant stress relief and emotional escape. Many participants described the rave experience as deeply spiritual, with many highlighting the dancefloor as a place to release stress and step away from daily pressures. A large number said they attend to break free from everyday routines, while others enjoyed stepping into a freer version of themselves amid the music and lights. Seeing their favorite DJs topped the list of reasons to go, and quite a few have even swapped traditional gym sessions for long nights of dancing as their main form of exercise.
Beyond the personal boost, more than 90% of the women surveyed felt right at home in the EDM community, where a shared love for the music easily sparks friendships that cross generational lines. That said, the study didn’t shy away from the hurdles, around one in five sometimes felt out of place because of their age, and nearly half had dealt with unwanted physical contact, often leading them to stick with close friends or choose more welcoming venues. Overall, the findings push back against the notion that nightlife belongs only to the young, showing instead how raving can deliver real mental health benefits for women over 40.
