I had the pleasure of running into JOYRYDE during my time in London. Over drinks, Jonney aka JOYRYDE, revealed his vision for his bass house project. JR himself is an interesting character, a truly self-styled artist whose personality is as large as his vision.
Not only does JOYRYDE make fantastically aggressive music, but he is actively involved in developing the visual medium of his project, cooking up his own release art and lyric videos to accompany every release. After his last release Flo received widespread support and attention, JOYRYDE is back with his latest heater, Speed Trap.
Right off the bat, it’s pretty easy to see the ‘Trap’ side of the tune. Joyryde brings in the 808s and massive horn stabs, which gives way to the whiny and wonky house intro. The drop is fierce and nails the semi complextro nuance of a good Bass House tune. One thing I can absolutely say about Joyryde, is that his sound design is rock solid. Fat punchy kicks, subdued vowel basses that give the song a bit of a Fidget feel. If you like dark, aggro, house music you better get with Speed Trap ASAP.
