In recent times, the trend of wearing traditional Native American clothing, particularly headdresses among female ravers, to music festivals has come under fire as something which might not seem all that culturally sensitive. In response this summer has seen a large number of music festivals moving to outright ban this kind of clothing due to an increasing number of complaints that wearing traditional Native American attire to concerts was not only culturally insensitive, but also made a mockery out of traditional Native American customs and culture itself.
Buzzfeed Video gives us an interesting take on the issue by reaching out to members of the Southern California Indian Center to ask people there for their thoughts directly.
Watch the full video below as Native Americans review festival clothing from celebrities like Jared Leto to regular festival ravers, and offer their thoughts on how those headdresses we’ve all seen at festivals should actually be used.
