There’s no denying — the music industry is driven by streaming numbers and Spotify leads the pack. The platform is an excellent indicator of popular artists, songs, and overall trends. Here’s a look at the top 10 most popular artists on Spotify, and their current most popular tracks.
Drake is king when it comes to music streaming and currently reigns with over 50 million monthly streamers. His 2017 album More Life is still making waves, but this iconic rapper keeps ’em coming. He just hit us with a brand new track “Nice For What,” on pace to be one of his most popular of all time. Currently, no one comes close to touching Drake’s monthly streaming numbers.
Next up, J Balvin takes the number 2 spot. The Colombian reggaeton singer has become a global sensation, best known for flavorful tracks like “Mi Gentle,” “Downtown,” and “X.” He’s collaborated with the likes of Daddy Yankee and Pharell Williams, Pitbull, and Camila Cabello just to name drop a few. He’s not going anywhere.
Songstress Dua Lipa finds herself as the number 3 most-globally-streamed artist and the only woman in the top 10. She often times blurs the lines between pop and dance music, particularly through her collab with Martin Garrix and Alison Wonderland’s trap remix of “New Rules.” Her recent collaboration with Diplo, “One Kiss,” is another fine example of this.
Post Malone takes his much-deserved number 4 spot. The hip hop artist recently broke first-day and week streaming records with his new album beerbongs & bentleys. Leading singles “rockstar” and “Psycho” set him up to go platinum upon the album’s release — no easy feat in today’s streaming world. He’s one of our absolute favorites to listen to and to hear remixed.
Finally, we have some producers on the list. Calvin Harris and Marshmello come in at number 4 and 5 respectively, proving EDM has made its way into the mainstream. These guys consistently put out music that bridges the gap between electronic and top 40. Calvin’s recent Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 featured everyone from Future to Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry to Ariana Grande, and so many more. Meanwhile, Mello has featured Selena Gomez, Anne-Marie, Khalid, and Lil Peep on his beats. Expect more to come.
Ed Sheeran just barely beats out David Guetta for the number 6 spot. The pop star’s album Divide completely took over the charts and streaming numbers haven’t been too shabby either. With Guetta is right at his heels, it seems the DJ/producer’s steady flow of singles has been enough to keep him relevant.
These guys are followed by The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar to round out the Top 10 Most Streamed Artists On Spotify. The Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy, which recently dropped overnight, has surely added to his hype. Kendrick Lamar’s album DAMN. and work with the Black Panther soundtrack have kept him on Spotify’s top 10 radar.
It’s awesome to see singer/songwriters, hip hop acts and DJ/producers all sharing a little pieces of the global streaming pie. Scratch that — really big pieces of the streaming pie. Listen to all these amazing artists right here and let us know who you listen to the most!
