When Gramatik isn’t in the studio cooking up his one of a kind blend of electro-soul and future funk, he’s hard at work curating his independent record label: Lowtemp Music. Needless to say, he comes across quite a few sonic gems and ear-pleasing beats from his friends and collaborators; and fortunately for all of us, several of these tunes and the artists that created them have been collected together for the imprint’s Lowtemporary compilation series. The first edition was stellar, and Volume Two looks to continue the trend. While the full release isn’t available just yet, you can get a first listen right here, courtesy of Psymbionic and his tune, ‘Blast’.
Sitting at the intersection of hip-hop and neuro-inspired glitch hop (with a dash of almost reggae-style vibes thrown in for good measure), ‘Blast’ packs more than enough sub-frequencies to knock your eardrums around. The tune is centered around a classic vocal sample (or two) from the one and only, Dr. Dre; once you hear that smooth, commanding flow, the vibe is definitely set. Thick, waxy synths churn and bubble once the drop hits, stirring the listener into a stew of off-kilter goodness. Short, ambient breakdowns help give the tune space and reinforce the wonky rhythms, keeping things fresh throughout the duration of the track. Psymbionic‘s style has constantly evolved over the years and this definitely feels like a culmination of all his latest work.
If you haven’t hit play yet, we can’t imagine why. We’d be willing to bet you’ll have ‘Blast’ on repeat for the next few days, as the full release of Lowtemporary Volume Two doesn’t drop until May 27th. It features an eclectic mix of styles from artists like Stickybuds, Russ Liquid, Beat Fatique, Adam Deitch, ProbCause, and many more, so get excited. In the meantime, be sure to check out the full stream of Psymbionic‘s submission after the jump!
