To anybody that’s even vaguely aware of the going on’s in the business part of the music industry, it should come to no surprise that downloads are rapidly disappearing as evidenced by the number of digital sales that “Closer” generated despite its #1 position on Billboard‘s Digital Song Sales chart.
The Chainsmokers and Halsey’s smash hit sold only 84,000 downloads last tracking week (ending October 27th) which is the lowest of any number one song on the chart in the last decade. While this might have to do with the fact that “Closer” may be on its way out as the #1 song in America, a month ago it sold 208,000 downloads in the week ending September 24th. it’s nevertheless reflective of the growing dominance of streaming.
To date, “Closer” has sold 1.7 million digital copies, but it’s been streamed over 497 million times on Spotify alone.
