Spotify Releases Year in Music 2017 List With Top Artists, Songs, Albums & More

Spotify has released its annual Year in Music list, featuring the most streamed artists, tracks, albums and up-and-comers for 2017!

Ed Sheeran, with 45 million monthly listeners and 6.3 billion streams this year, takes the cake as the top overall streamed artist globally. Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and pop music’s favorite electronic-rooted duo — The Chainsmokers — all round out the top 5 in the leading category.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t been a big year for women in music, as males dominated the charts and streams. Our leading ladies in global Spotify streams for 2017 are Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Sia.

All categories considered, The Chainsmokers are the only act to represent EDM on Spotify’s annual list, though they tend to lean more pop, especially with their 2017 album Memories… Do Not Open. Their collaboration with Coldplay, “Something Just Like This,” is one of the most streamed tracks of the year.

Other top songs include Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You,” both versions of “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi feat. Daddy Yankee (and Justin Bieber), and “I’m the One” by DJ Khaled feat. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne.

Spotify also details some new genres on the rise — cinematic dubstep, chaotic black metal, trap latino and more! See all below!
