Skuls was an artist that unfortunately flew under the radar in 2014. Now in 2015 they’re starting off strong with a free 3 song EP chock-full of unique ideas and clever twists on familiar genres. What is really appealing about Skuls is how their tracks progress and flow, there isn’t the typical formulaic builds and predictable songs. The personal gem of the EP for me certainly has to be the brass-infused twerk track “Open”, the way the intro lulls you into a false sense of peace before dropping into a high energy climax is refreshing and engaging. “Returned” and “Burn It Down”, the other two tracks off the EP, are also very strong tracks that have their own unique flavor that helps to build the mysterious identity of Skuls. Fantastic work and free music don’t always go hand but in this case they’re in a full-on cuddle.
