ZHU is one of those artists who can consistently put out music and still feel like it’s been forever. A big reason for that is because his music is so constantly and frequently in demand. He released a full debut album in 2016, followed by a stellar 4-track EP at the end of last year, which included an unheard of collaboration with NERO called “Dreams.” Now in the first half of 2018, he’s released his latest project, the curiously titled Ringo’s Desert Pt. 1.
“Pt. 1” immediately implies there’s at least another part coming, but we’ve already got our hands full with these seven tracks alone. “Desert Woman” had already been teased via ZHU’s website weeks ago, and “Burn Babylon” should be familiar to many fans. Still, the rest of the EP, or album, depending on your interpretation, is just pure sex.
“Guilty Love” is a sexually charged banger that also manages to tell a story via a spoken word interlude toward the beginning of the song; it’s about love and betrayal and loyalty, wrapped within the warm embrace of a melodic, deep house stunner.
Meanwhile, “Provocateur” is a sultry club-ready track with dreamy synths and delicate, electric guitar riffs that simply oozes sex appeal. Unlike “Guilty Love,” there’s nothing clandestine or forbidden about this song. “Provocateur” urges you to let your freak flag fly on the dance floor and embrace your inner sexual demon.
The whole EP is paired with a new tour announcement from ZHU. The 21-date North American tour kicks off at El Rey Theatre in Chico on September 7th and includes stops at The Shrine in Los Angeles, Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn and Rebel in Toronto, before wrapping up at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison on October 26th. Fans can expect the performance to transcend typical ‘dance music’ shows with ZHU bringing out brand new stage production alongside his live band.
