Songs rich with seductive vocals and instrumental flow are bound to draw in producers from all across the board. It is no surprise that with the release of Gallant’s emotion-filled song, “Weight in Gold,” came an onslaught of remixes, edits, flips, bootlegs, or whatever the kids are calling it these days. Regardless, this popularity often makes it a challenge for producers to create a unique, memorable, and re-playable interpretation of the original song.
However, Ekali’s rendition of “Weight in Gold” managed that and so much more.
Despite starting to produce only two years ago, Ekali is swiftly gaining international recognition for his textured sounds that ooze with a slightly dark energy. No wonder he was enticed to remix an artist known for raw emotion, both lyrically and vocally. Ekali manages to perfectly reflect and enhance Gallant’s sound of anguish, sorrow, and regret without ever overpowering the vocalist.
Instantaneously, Ekali creates an haunting yet inviting atmosphere with a slow 27 second piano build into the drop of woozy bass and drawing vocals. The dangerously deep tone continues to be heard throughout the song underneath the pulsation of layers that forms a soulful ebb and flow of intensity. It comes to an end with a fittingly eerie echoing of Gallant’s voice, leaving the listener satisfied but craving to press that re-play button.
With the release of his new remix, along with the sampling of his production on Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late album, this Canadian native will surely continue to raise eyebrows.
So sit back and let Ekali be the puppet master of your emotions. Enjoy!
