Bay Area badman, VNDMG, has had a lock on hyphedelic dance-floor bangers for quite some time now; there’s not a booty above knee-level when he’s at the decks. And while we absolutely love his low-end heavy, no-holds barred approach to making music, we’re always eager to listen when a talented artist decides to branch out and explore their darker side. VNDMG did just that on his latest EP, Facing Ghosts; a severe departure from his signature, uptempo style, this release focuses on off-kilter, experimental beat structures and melancholy, haunting sound design. Thematically, Facing Ghosts is tied together by a story of self-exploration and introspection, with collaborators Abstract Rude & DJ Balance helping push those elements to the forefront.
The bulk of the EP is given to 7 original tracks and collaborations, but the remixes are absolutely wild. Reverend of Weird and Liquid Amber beat-hustler, Bleep Bloop, heads things up, with ONHELL, Etched, and Ethan Glass lending there talents to the mix as well. And while each of them really came through for this release, it’s Ethan‘s remix of ‘Show Me’ we truly want to bring to your attention. He screwed down the tempo and flipped Abstract Rude‘s vocals over the beat to create a supremely gritty piece of music; it seriously reminds us of UK grime, which is absolutely never a bad thing. A tsunami of sub-bass hits when this tune really gets going, so make sure your subwoofers are ready to bark. Ethan Glass‘ remix can be found after the jump, so give it a listen and see what you think. The full Facing Ghosts EP is available on Bandcamp & iTunes; grab a copy if you’re feelin’ the vibes!
