The moon will rise brighter and closer to the Earth tonight than it has in over 70 years. Occuring about once ever 14 months, “supermoons” fall during the time of of year when the moon’s orbit is nearer to the surface of Earth. Due to the planet’s oval shape, the times of “perigee” refer to the point at which its nearest edge aligns with the moon.
What’s special about tonight’s supermoon in particular, however, is that it will be stationed at a measely 221,524 miles from our planet’s surface, compared to the average distance of 238,900 miles. According to the Los Angeles Times, the last time the moon was this near was on January 6, 1948, when it approached even 30 miles closer than the supermoon tonight. It won’t return this close again until November 24, 2034.
In honor of this spectacular occassion, we’ve drummed a perfect space-themed playlist to go along with your moon sightings. At 3:23 a.m. Monday morning (PST), during the peak of the supermoon, make sure to head below and enjoy nostalgic tracks from the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex, RL Grime, Daft Punk, Deadmau5 and many more.
